The law in Washington, in plain English
Washington's 2020 sports wagering law, HB 2638, limited sports betting to tribal casinos under compacts the Washington State Gambling Commission oversees. Some casinos offer a mobile app, but it switches off once you leave the property, so no sportsbook takes a Seahawks bet from a living room in Seattle or Spokane. A 2026 law, SB 6137 (in effect June 11), changed only college games: the casino books may now take Washington college teams, without player props on college athletes.
Prediction markets are in court here. The Gambling Commission says event contracts are not authorized under state law, and in August a King County Superior Court judge ordered Kalshi to geofence Washington out of its sports and election contracts. On Aug. 28 the Ninth Circuit, whose rulings bind federal courts in Washington, held in a Nevada case that sports event contracts are not swaps and that a state may apply its gambling law to them. Novig, a CFTC-designated exchange where you trade against other traders, began offering contracts here in August and sued to block enforcement; the state moved to dismiss on Oct. 19. Novig and Polymarket US were available as of this review. That can change with one ruling, so check this page before a game.
